At the time that we joined together to ratify the Kayanarekówa (Great Peace), a total eclipse darkened the skies so deeply that the nocturnal animals woke to encircle and witness the calm of the people who unified under the Great White Pine. As our brother the Sun re-emerged from behind the kindness of Grandmother Moon, all Onkwehonwe were awakened with a new sense of unity and we intend to walk in unity until the end of time.
Event Timing
This full solar eclipse is a monumental time for the Haudenosaunee reminding us of when and why we put down our weapons and gathered under the Great Pine for the inception of the confederacy and the embracing of Kaianere'ko:wa/Kayannere'ké:wa/Gawyehnehshehgowa/Kayanla Kówa/Gayanesra:gowan, or Great Law of Peace.
On a New Moon
In it's totality, the eclipse path will cross Turtle Island; passing over Mexico, United States, and Canada. Solar eclipses happen only at the new moon phase, when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow on Earth, and blocks or partially blocks our view of the Sun. Though solar eclipses happen as often as lunar eclipses, they are visible from such a small area of Earth each time that it’s much rarer to encounter one. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.
Haudenosaunee Community Path
Haudenosaunee communities are aligned with the eclipse path.
There is no evidence that this alignment has happened since the stories of Kayanarekówa (Great Law) and there is no evidence that it will happen again. Full solar eclipse predictions end at the year 3000.
Scientific Studies
NASA developed a pair of catalogs of solar eclipses: one covering a 5,000-year period spanning from about 4000 years ago to about 1000 years into the future; the other a 10,000-year catalog of solar eclipses spanning from about 6000 years ago to about 4000 years into the future. https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/solar.html
Alignment with Path
In studying each map on these pages, there is no eclipse that ever aligned exactly to the path of our Haudenosaunee communities. The year 1257 saw a west to earth path across the U.S.A. but still, the path was not close to being aligned with us like it will be in 2024. Total Solar Eclipses: -0999 to 0000 and Total Solar Eclipses: 0001 to 1000 It is safe to assume that NASA studies are accuate and further point to a monumental call to the Haudenosaunee peoples.

Feminine and Masculine
As Grandmother Moon takes a moment to step in front of our brother, the Sun, it is symbolic of a shift to uplift the sisterhood. It is a time to revisit the travels of Peacemaker, retell the story of Skywoman and recapture the serenity of her descendant, Tsiokonsaseh (Mother of Nations, Mother of Peace). In this dangerously violent world, it is a time to remind ourselves how we came to be of Good Mind. We call on her.
Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000
There are two researched solar eclipse recordings and it is not confirmed which one accurately cites the date of the ratification of the Great Law of Peace.
Jack Rossen dates August 18, 0909 and Barbara Alice Mann dates August 22, 1142.
The “Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000” (NASA/TP-2006-214141) are the documents used to collect the images below for the years 0909 and 1142. Both events do focus on the Great Lakes Region but neither follows the path of all of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Nations collectively as the 2024 eclipse will on April 8.

This site is meant to be general information and condensed stories for those who are interested in beginning their learning journey and/or seek a better understanding of the 2024 eclipse and the matrilineal ways of the Haudenosaunee. You may also find spelling and language discrepancies, please encounter them with an open mind to the fluidity and complex nature of our dialects and language.

As our brother the Sun re-emerged from behind the kindness of Grandmother Moon, all Onkwehonwe were awakened with a new sense of balance and unity and we intend to walk in unity until the end of time.
Some kononkwe (women) are weaving the significance of the eclipse at the time of Kayanarekówa into the one that happened in 2024. In this world of war, we are reminded of the monumental role that Peace Mother, Tsiokonsaseh played in establishing unity, equality and peace among the nations.
We are calling in peace now and we are elevating Peace Mother and our voices to call for reunification.
Foundational to Haudenosaunee identity is the transmission of feminine knowledge, social structures and diplomacy and we have found a time and place to recapture that way of understanding; under the sky, hand in hand, in song and in a display of effeminate matrilineal power.

From the bodies of women flows the relationship of those generations both to society and the natural world. In this way the earth is our mother, the old people said. In this way, we as women are earth"
